Happy Trails to You!

Family taking a leisurely walk on a trail.

If you are looking for an activity to simply de-stress or you're an avid Fitbit 10,000 steps a day kind of person, then taking a walk through one of the estuary trails will get you through those steps in about three hours or less, depending on your stride! The shortest trail is two miles round trip with the longest less than six miles.
Armadillos can be spotted on the trails.
A gopher tortoise is very entertaining!

Walking along, taking in all that nature with your family (and the family dog if on a leash), or simply walking by yourself, can be quite an adventure! At separate times, I have come across a family of armadillos and a gopher tortoise very slowing crossing in front of me on a trail. Once, I almost stepped on a pygmy rattler, but that's another story!

These trails are very popular with bird watchers, too. You might spot different species of warblers or egrets, for example. If you're interested, the research reserve at the estuary offers free guided cultural hikes where you can learn about Guana history told by very knowledgeable guides.

Guide points out some of the local vegetation growing along the trails.

At the end of each trail, you'll wind up at the Tolomato River where you'll find picnic tables. So, as I said, take the family and pack some sandwiches, a few snacks, and some water into those backpacks! Then, sit down after an exhilarating walk and take in all that beauty!
